About Me

I am a 50 year old man who lives near Alston in the north-east of Cumbria, where I have lived for most of my life. I work as a free-lance Book-keeper.

In 1992 I graduated from Lancaster University with a degree in Environmental Science and I lived in Lancaster for 14 years afterwards. I used to regularly watch BBC North West Tonight and can remember my dismay whilst studying at Lancaster University when, on 27th September 1991, I discovered that BBC North West Tonight chopped- off all but southernmost Cumbria: “No more news from Home [near Alston] whilst at University”, I sighed!

  1. Wonderful website you have here but I was curious if you knew of any user discussion forums that cover the same topics discussed here? I’d really love to be a part of community where I can get advice from other experienced people that share the same interest. If you have any suggestions, please let me know. Thank you!

    1. Dear Barton

I am happy that you enjoy the Website and associated articles? Do you live in the North West?

There is not a lot out there in terms of Regional Forums of any description that will enable you to discuss Regional Television with like-minded folk in the same part of the country. Digital Spy (https://forums.digitalspy.com/) is the best, but there’s also TV Forum where they just talk about style and presentation rather than the content of programmes.

On this Website there is a platform where you can discuss the merits of Regional Television in different parts of North West England- https://northwestisnorthwest.org/northwest-england-discussion-forums/

Do discuss and share this Website with your friends and family. The more folk can write in and organise to contact BBC North West Tonight and ITV1 Granada if they are not happy with the amount of Regional News coverage for their area the more likely it is that something will happen.

    1. I am pleased that you like the Website. If you live in the North West, do tell your friends and family about it. The more people who look at the articles and realise that they are being short- changed by BBC North West Tonight and ITV Granada Reports the more influence we can bring to bear on Regional Television broadcasters in the North West of England.

  2. I’m not sure why but this weblog is loading extremely slow for me. Is anyone else having this problem or is it a problem on my end? I’ll check back later on and see if the problem still exists.

  3. Good evening, and I am pleased that you enjoy reading through my Website. Do you live in North West England- north of Manchester? If so, you will find the articles might strike a chord with you as regards to the North West Regional Television news being too Manchester/ Liverpool- orientated.

  4. I know this if off topic but I’m looking into starting my own blog and was curious what all is required to get setup?
I’m assuming having a blog like yours would cost a pretty penny?
I’m not very internet savvy so I’m not 100% certain. Any tips or advice would
    be greatly appreciated. Thank you

    1. Dear Nigel,

I am pleased that you are enjoying looking through the Website. Do you live in North West England?

To answer your question, and as I would not consider myself tech- savvy either, I use WordPress, which is an excellent platform to build up your own Website. Firstly you need to register with WordPress, you can do this cheaply for just £ 36 up front (this will pay for a year of WordPress supporting your Website) but for that you have a complete support system to start building your website. On the left-hand side are a series of options- select “Appearance” and then “Themes” to customise how you want your website to look like: I use “Hever” which is good for blogs.
Once you are ready to write posts click on “Write” at the top of the page and you will be taken to the Editor page where- on the right-hand side you also have options to select the size and font of the text: Blocks relate to paragraphs (where you might choose to insert a picture- Ctrl and C together to select a picture from your computer, then Ctrl and V together to paste said- picture into your document.

At the top of your Edit screen there is an option to paste website links into your document, select the link and paste (Ctrl V) a website link copied from another website, then press Enter- and the link is in your document. Under Settings, then Reading Settings select the option for your Website to be findable on Google and you will start getting people to read your new Website. When you finally want to publish your document, select the “Publish” option at the top right of the screen. Give WordPress a try, tell me how you get on.

    1. I totally agree with you. I believe that there was a local TV service called Manx Telecom TV that ceased operations at the end of 2020 so you have a choice of BBC North West Tonight or ITV1 Granada Reports, neither of which scarcely even mention the island. Since the Isle of Man is a country in its own right it should have its own Television station just as the Channel Islands does.

Do write to your Government about this and get all of those you know who live on the Isle of Man to do likewise. There cannot be many Manx viewers happy about a choice of two Regional News services both providing next- to -no coverage of the Isle of Man. In the meantime, boycott both BBC North West and ITV Granada and try the You Tube based Isle of Man TV- website here https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCCIWwfPM2JDFBa_dj3OykOg .

  7. I do love the way you have framed this specific difficulty and it really does present me personally a lot of fodder for thought. Nevertheless, coming from everything that I have personally seen, I really wish as the actual feedback pack on that people today keep on point and in no way embark on a tirade associated with some other news du jour. Anyway, thank you for this exceptional piece and although I can not really go along with this in totality, I respect your perspective.
